Care of the Environment

The care of the environment is high on our list of priorities. We believe  in re-using before re-cycling, and to this end we offer to our porters and/or local villagers, empty coffee tins and lidded jars for the storage of dry goods, and empty large fruit cans which may be used as chimney extension parts in some areas.

All other waste, if not biodegradable in situ, is taken back to Kathmandu for proper re-cycling. It is our aim to set an example to villagers and others, as to the importance of re-cycling and minimising pollution.

By the same token, we discourage the purchase of plastic bottles of mineral water, through provision of safe, boiled water and encouragement to use iodine or other water-purifying chemicals. This helps to avoid the use of non-biodegradable materials, and the consequent problem of unnecessary manufacture and recycling of plastic containers.
